Earlier this year, specifically in March, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) mandated all telecommunication service providers in Nigeria to adopt uniform shortcodes for their various services. The objective of this directive is to streamline the codes utilized for identical services across all mobile network operators. In this blog, Nigerians will find the codes to check the balance of airtime and data on MTN, GLO, Airtel, 9mobile.
Starting from May 17 2023, the implementation of these harmonized shortcodes will come into effect, and all old codes used for services such as recharging, subscribing for data, and checking balance will cease to function.
Previously, each telecom operator had its unique code for checking balances, recharging, borrowing credit, and other services. This posed a challenge for telecom subscribers who had more than one line to memorize different codes for each operator.
However, the harmonization of shortcodes means that common shortcodes used by customers will now be uniform across all networks. For instance, the code for recharging a line is now the same across all mobile networks.

- 2442 is retained for Do-Not-Disturb (DND) unsolicited messaging complaint management.
- 3232 is also retained for porting services, otherwise called mobile number portability.
The NCC has approved new codes for various services, and the old and new harmonized shortcodes have been running concurrently. They will continue to do so until May 17, 2023, when all networks are expected to have fully migrated to the new codes. The NCC has provided this period of concurrent usage to allow telecom consumers to familiarize themselves with the new codes.
The initiative aligns with the NCC’s regulatory modernization program and is essential in making life easier for telecom consumers. With the same codes used for various services across all mobile networks, Nigerians can memorize a single code for each service, improving their quality of experience (QoE).
